December is filled with anticipation for the holiday season. First graders are learning about winter holidays and cultural celebrations using light. Girls were treated to the time honored tradition of St. Lucia Day celebrated by our Swedish families. Sofie Dolan organized a delightful candlelight procession and song, Santa Lucia by second and third graders.

SPANISH with MAESTRA LINA: Muñequita de Nieve
First grade (girls) have been learning all about syllables in español. They started by learning the alphabet and then moved on to breaking words into small components. Through a number of games and activities they have begun to read, pronounce, write, and identify many different words, especially related to our most recent unit on Peru.

One letter they have been exploring a lot is the 4th letter of the Spanish alphabet called "che". Their vocabulary is "chockful" of words with this letter! Their latest activity is a Christmas song called Muñequita de Nieve (Little Snow Girl Doll). Little snow girl doll has rosy round cheeks. She's cachetona and cheerful. She wears a Peruvian chullo (hand woven cap) and a warm chal (shawl), both made from hand-knitted alpaca wool. She is irresistibly adorable/cute (chula).

The Muñequita de Nieve project combines writing, art, singing, and performing while demonstrating that snow girls rule! (not just snowmen)
