June 3 Field Day, Fort Winfry Scott Field (in the Presidio)
During language arts lessons, the girls are busily learning (or practicing) word study, fluency, writing, and comprehension skills.
• Word study skills will introduce building multisyllable words using the CVC and CVCe patterns: pic•nic, mas•cot, cup•cake, rep•tile.
• Our new reading unit introduces reading posters, big book selection - "What are Some Rules at School?", and Readers Theatre -"Itsy Bitsy Spider Climbs Again". Girls are learning comprehension strategies:

• Analyzing questions and finding answers (use clues, evidence in text)
Our Writing Workshop focus introduces writing fiction. Girls are revisiting strategies for bringing characters to life and adding depth through writing chapters. Girls have opportunities to plan their ideas before and during writing with writing partners.
SCIENCE & ENGINEERING
Earth investigations continue with lessons on the properties of rocks and the uses of rock sizes: pebbles, gravel, sand, silt, and clay. Girls are communicating observations and comparisons from hands-on experiences with earth materials in their Science Notebooks. Upcoming lessons will cover volcanoes, fossils, and dinosaurs. How do volcanoes create rocks and new land? What can we learn about the history of the Earth from fossils?
A Sticky Situation: Designing Walls
First graders are introduced to the concept of walls with a literature selection, Yi Min's Great Wall. Activating prior knowledge about earth materials, girls will design a mortar mixture from earth materials (clay, soil, sand) to build models of small-scale walls. Our final exploration ends with two exciting "demolition" days to observe how walls stand up during testing.
NOTE: Demolition is scheduled for the mornings of 5/22 and 5/23 at 8:15-8:45 AM in homeroom. We will send out the list of the girls with their demolition date: Wednesday (5/22) or Thursday (5/23).

SEL
Social Emotional Learning activities and discussions teach our students how to express, understand, and connect with themselves and others. This month's focus revisits friendship, active listening, and appreciation of others.
Peer leaders came in with Ms. Heather to teach a lesson on inclusion and exclusion on Tuesday. After reading Hurtful Hyena, first graders responded to questions related to the story. How did Hurtful Hyena feel when Neji did so well in the game? How did Neji feel? What did the other friends do? Then girls met in small groups with individual peer leaders to role-play "inclusion solutions".

MATHDuring May, first graders will be learning about time and money. Using paper clocks, girls will practice telling time on the hour and half-hour. For money, they will identify the corresponding values for penny (1¢), nickel (5¢), dime (10¢), and quarter (25¢). Girls will apply strategies they have used with place value by exchanging dimes (10 for $1.00). We'll be playing games with money: Nickel-Penny Game, Dime-Nickel-Penny Game, One Dollar Exchange, and Race to a Dollar.
| Woodshop Update |
Girls spent the last woodshop class sanding their
frames by hand and using the disc sander to break
remaining sharp edges and round the corners.
