MATERIALS ENGINEERING
First graders are being introduced to the role of materials engineers. What do materials engineers do?
• Test and explore properties of materials

• Create new materials
• Use materials to create and improve objects

FOCUS QUESTION: How Do Walls Help People?
After thinking about walls and identifying properties that would be important for a wall, girls took a walk around the neighborhood to look at walls. They drew examples of various walls in their Design & Engineering Notebooks. What materials are walls made from? How are walls the same? How are they different?

INVESTIGATING EARTH MATERIALS
Girls took a closer look at earth materials: soil, sand, and clay (powder-form). They recorded information about the properties of dry and wet materials in Design & Engineering Notebooks.
