SOCIAL STUDIES: CITY & SUBURB MODELS
First graders have been busily constructing small-scale models of city (downtown) and suburb communities. Girls started with thinking and writing about why people would choose to live in a city or suburb. They made connections to living in or nearby San Francisco. During language arts, we read aloud the big book and student copies, Life in a Suburban Community. Girls identified and compared the main features associated with a city and suburb. They brainstormed ideas related to people living in those communities: What are they doing? Where are they going? Why would they prefer a city or suburb?
