Art with Ms. Ghilly DeYoung
Ms. Ghilly DeYoung teaches K-2 Art at CES and SHB. This school year marks her 16th year at Schools of the Sacred Heart. She is also a working artist and a proud CES parent.
The first grade girls are creating mixed media pieces inspired by author and artist, Lois Ehlert. After reading her book, Feathers for Lunch, which features a variety of birds and art work created in the same way, the girls painted two paintings apiece. At the second class, they began cutting their paintings up and collaging the pieces together  to create, at least two birds. They will complete the piece by drawing with oil pastel to create the background.

Music with Mrs. Harmon
Anita Harmon is excited to be working with your first grade daughters after teaching SHB Lower Form music for the past 12 years. Although this  isher first experience in teaching a girls' single sex classroom, she has taught coed music classes for almost 30 years. Anita enjoys sharing her love of music through singing, dancing, and playing games and instruments in the music classroom.

Clapping Game: "Bow Wow Wow"
Finding Partners

As part of their current music classes, first graders have been developing a short rhyme "Acka Backa Soda Cracker" - first speaking it while keeping a clapping pattern and singing each girl's name after. Then they played the beat on percussion instruments, using different instruments for each of the four lines. Finally, in addition to playing the beat, the students sing and play the rhythm of each girl's name. This is an exploration of ensemble play and the students  enjoy working on their skills.
