Numbers in Action!
First graders have been exploring numbers and related concepts with various math tools and materials (ten frame, counters, connecting cubes, number bonds). In math journal work, girls practice the concept of "one more" using ten frames and two-colored counters. During a recent math lesson integrated with technology, girls used connecting ten-train cubes to find two parts that make a whole number.

Adding Near Numbers
Girls have been practicing adding near numbers with the games: Count on One and Count on Two. Using a game board, spinner, and two-colored counters, the girls must add on to the number they spin. The first girl to use all of her 10 counters wins the game.
